On Thursday Badman received four Associated Press awards and seven Illinois Press Association awards.

Badman on Thursday received seven Illinois Press Association and four Illinois Associated Press Media Editors awards on two separate contests.

BLOOMINGTON — John Badman of The Telegraph in Alton on Thursday received a total of 11 awards from both the Illinois Press Association and the Illinois Associated Press Media Editors.
In total, The Telegraph won 12 awards from the Illinois Press Association on Thursday. More than 1,400 entries were submitted from nearly 100 daily and non-daily newspapers in 38 categories. The Telegraph competed in Division D, against other daily newspapers up to 10,000 circulation.
Badman claimed four Associated Press awards for small daily newspapers.
In the News Photo competition, he placed first for his photo of a truck convoy through Madison County in 2022 and second for his photo of suspicious fires in Alton.
In the Feature Photo competition, he placed second for his photo of a girl with wind-blown hair trying to eat an ice cream cone and third for his photo of kids at play.
Also on Thursday, Badman was named the winner of seven Illinois Press Association awards for small daily newspapers.
In Spot News Photos, Badman won first place for "Long chase ends," a photo of officers with guns drawn making an arrest in Alton. He also received a third place award for "Fire spreads" and a fourth place award for "Four wheeler trapped."
In Feature Photos, Badman received a second place award for the ice cream photo, a third place award for "Nature's artwork" of an icy Mississippi River and a fourth place award for "Water umbrella" of kids playing at the Alton Splash Pad.
In General News Photos, Badman won a second place award for the truck convoy photo.
The Telegraph's editorial team of Badman, Scott Cousins, Jill Moon, Dylan Suttles and Ron DeBrock also received a third place award for Localized National Story for its coverage of the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling that overturned the Roe V. Wade abortion decision.
Additionally, Billy Woods of The Intelligencer in Edwardsville won a second place award for Feature Story for his article about a popular pet tortoise in Collinsville.
The advertising department of The Telegraph on Thursday received four awards:
• First place for Food Ad, Division H
• Second place for Best Shared Page/Signature Page, Division H
• Third place for Religious/Nonprofit Ad, Division Daily
• Fourth place for Best Group Promotion, Division Daily.
The Jacksonville Journal-Courier, Hearst's other regional daily newspaper, received seven editorial awards in the Illinois Press Association contest:
• Second place for General Excellence
• Second place for Business/Economic Reporting
• Third place for Feature Writing
• Fourth place for Agricultural Story
• Second place for Photo Series
• Second place for Informational Graphic
• Fourth place for Headline Writing.
